Misted double glazing? Here’s what it actually means!

Moisture can appear on your window glass in three ways:

Between the glass panes: We often refer to this as “blown” or simply a failed double-glazing unit. Most importantly this moisture can’t be wiped away- it’s a permanent reminder that your windows are no longer fully functional. And this obscured view is more than just an eyesore.
On the outside of the window: You might be worried about this, but it is in fact perfectly normal, especially after having new windows installed. It’s actually a sign that your new double glazing is working efficiently. During the winter months, on a cold morning, the outside pain of glass remains freezing cold because indoor heat is prevented from reaching this outer pane of glass. Because it is actually colder than the outside air temperature, condensation forms. Your windows are doing a great job of keeping the heat inside your home.
On the inside of the window: If condensation is forming inside your windows, this is a result of high humidity inside your home and poor ventilation. Improving the natural ventilation of your home with modern windows including trickle vents and having more windows that open can create a healthier humidity level. The ideal indoor humidity level is between 40% and 60%.

The key issue with overly high humidity inside your home is that this promotes the growth of mold, mildew, and dust mites. These all result in poor air quality and can negatively impact you if you suffer from asthma or severe allergies.

As well as the obvious health concerns, mold that persists on windows can eventually damage the UPVC window frames causing degradation of rubber seals and if present for extended periods, it can cause yellow or brown staining of the white plastic frames.

When windows are blown and misted this is as direct result of the hermetic seal failing. Each window double-glazing unit is a sealed unit with and insulating gas such as argon gas between the two glass panels. This prevents moisture from entering and the insulating gas from escaping. When we replace only the entire glass unit, you save money compared to replacing the UPVC frames as well.

Another important and degradable feature of your windows are the weather seals (gaskets). These are flexible, rubber- like strips that run along the outer window frame. Their job is to keep water and air out of your home. They compress when the window is shut to provide a weather-tight seal. The different types include bubble gaskets, wedge gaskets, and E-gaskets.

When weather seals fail, this is due to the draught-proofing strips hardening as they age, or cracking. Signs of this issue include detecting a draught, cold air coming in, hearing more outside noise, and possibly the pooling of rainwater on the internal windowsill. So, if they have flattened and lost their bounce, replace them – weather/gasket replacement.
